About this curriculum

We aim to encourage children to have a go, to believe in themselves and become a ‘Creative Colin’ in order to boost their confidence and feel a sense of achievement as an artist.

Our Art and Design curriculum ensures that children explore, imagine, and create. Through engaging practice, communication, and a dive into the importance of Art and Design, children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Children are taught to embrace the journey of an artist, to understand the importance of making and experimenting. We recognise the importance of our children having knowledge and understanding of art in the wider world, to broaden their understanding of the multiple forms of art and to take inspiration from this.

Sequential Curriculum

Art strands with declarative and procedural knowledge that deepens and broadens progressively each year:

  • Sketch books/recording
  • Art skills
  • Learning from others
  • Techniques
  • Creativity and design

Substantive concepts identified within art. The understanding of these is deepened every time they are re-visited through links to prior learning.

🏃‍♂️🏅 Year 6 Launch Their Athletics Unit 🏅🏃‍♀️ Year 6 have made an excellent start to their athletics unit this week, focusing on developing jumping technique and understanding the importance of personal improvement. Pupils worked on their standing long jump, learning how to generate power through strong arm drive and controlled take-off and landing. It was particularly pleasing to see the teamwork on display, with children measuring accurately, supporting their peers and offering thoughtful feedback to help each other improve. Throughout the lesson, pupils were reminded that being an athlete is about resilience, determination and striving for personal bests — values that were clearly demonstrated by all. Well done, Year 6 — we look forward to seeing their progress over the coming weeks!

Year 3 Dartmoor Adventure! This week, most of Year 3 have enjoyed the unusually dry weather to enjoy a one night residential on Dartmoor. They travelled to Cadover bridge and made their way along the River Plym to the cottage at Dewerstone. Once they had settled into their bedrooms and made their beds, they enjoyed preparing their potatoes for their evening meal. We went to have some fun and make the most of the sun by playing some games outside. After dinner, they went on a night walk where they turned off their torches to see how much they could see in the dark. They enjoyed rock scrambling the next day, competing challenges along the way. All in all they had a fantastic time! Thank you to all the grown ups who went with them and made the visit possible. We hope they weren't too muddy when they got home!

We were delighted to welcome Sharon, a member of our local Muslim community, into year 5 today. She shared beautiful insights into the core elements of her faith and what daily life is like as a Muslim in Britain today. Our students asked some fantastic, thoughtful questions. Thank you Sharon for inspiring such an open and respectful conversation!

Did you know, Torquay exists on an ancient fault line? The Sticklepath Fault (or Sticklepath-Lustleigh fault) is a major geological fault line that runs through Devon and emerges in Torquay, particularly visible at the Rock Walk cliffs. Caused by earth movements around 300 million years ago, this strike-slip fault extends from North Devon across Dartmoor, and has caused occasional mild earthquakes in the area, with tremors felt as recently as the 1990s. Our Year 6 pupils recently enjoyed an exciting and informative geography fieldwork trip to Torquay, where they explored the fascinating Sticklepath Fault Line. This hands-on experience brought their classroom learning to life, giving them the opportunity to observe real geological features, ask thoughtful questions, and deepen their understanding of how the Earth’s surface has changed over time. The weather held out for this fieldwork visit and they all had a great time!
