About this curriculum

We aim to encourage children to have a go, to believe in themselves and become a ‘Creative Colin’ in order to boost their confidence and feel a sense of achievement as an artist.

Our Art and Design curriculum ensures that children explore, imagine, and create. Through engaging practice, communication, and a dive into the importance of Art and Design, children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Children are taught to embrace the journey of an artist, to understand the importance of making and experimenting. We recognise the importance of our children having knowledge and understanding of art in the wider world, to broaden their understanding of the multiple forms of art and to take inspiration from this.

Sequential Curriculum

Art strands with declarative and procedural knowledge that deepens and broadens progressively each year:

  • Sketch books/recording
  • Art skills
  • Learning from others
  • Techniques
  • Creativity and design

Substantive concepts identified within art. The understanding of these is deepened every time they are re-visited through links to prior learning.

Today we celebrated 80 years since VE Day. We all wore red, white and blue to represent the colours of the flag, we had a silence as a mark of respect, and Year 6 held a street party style lunch celebration. It was a great way to mark this historic day. 🇬🇧

Today some Year 5 and 6 children took to the field for an action-packed Tag Rugby Tournament, kicking things off with a skills practice session to sharpen their passing, dodging, and teamwork. With energy high and spirits even higher, the afternoon saw teams go head-to-head in a lively tournament full of fantastic play, great sportsmanship, and loads of fun. A big well done to all participants for showing resilience, respect, and rugby skills in action!

Squirrels had an amazing trip to Dartmouth on the steam railway yesterday. Year 2 are learning about Brunel and the development of the steam train and railways. They enjoyed a ride on the train and took a trip on the passenger ferry. Afterwards, they walked to the park for lunch and had fun playing in the playground. It was a fantastic day, and they represented the school exceptionally well!

VE day event at St Matthew's Church Please see a message from Reverend Samantha below about joining in with this event: It's not often you can be a part of a once in a lifetime event, but this Sunday we all can as we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. Now it's true to say that this historic event occurred a little ahead of the average Kids Church member, but there will doubtless be a few people attending who were the same age 80 years ago. Imagine the stories they can share with the children of today, or indeed with us all! We really hope you will take the time to join the fun this Sunday. By the way there is an optional dress code of red, white and blue, so feel free to come fully 'themed' for the occasion. With blessings Samantha P.S. It's a Bring & Share party so any contribution of sandwiches, cake etc will be much appreciated.

Year 4 had a superb day last week being hooked into their Anglo-Saxon learning experience. Throughout the day, they were immersed in activities which made them think about what life as an Anglo-Saxon might have been like. They made their own bread, designed coins, made shields, printed on fabrics and learnt a simple weaving technique!

Year 1 had a fantastic trip to Occombe Farm last week. 🐷🐐We started the day by making pizzas, we picked fresh herbs from the garden and made our own dough! Whilst the pizzas were cooking we had a walk around the farm and were very lucky to feed the goats and pigs, which the children really enjoyed. We were also very lucky with the weather and had a brilliant day! ☀️ Thankyou to all of the parents for your help, Year 1 team x🐰🦊
