About this curriculum

Through geography children will discover a sense of wonder about the world around them and the wider world.

They will learn how understanding the complexities of its world, appreciating the diversity of culture helps bridge divides and bring people together. They are given opportunities to make comparisons to other localities in order to help them widen their horizons.

They will learn how their environment impacts their lives living in Torbay and how their lives impact the immediate environment. Torbay is of a unique global significance being part of the UNESCO geopark and is surrounded by a natural bay and coastline. This will prepare students for future employment in the tourist industry within the local area.

At Cockington we recognise the importance of safeguarding the earth for future generations and understanding the impact this can have on Torbay and globally.  We must teach children to care for our world, commit to a sustainable future and develop global climate ambassadors with the knowledge that they can make a difference.

Congratulations to all of the children, who have received a certificate for reaching incredible targets in reading this week! After passing a quiz, on Accelerated Reader, all the words are counted to give the children a total word count. Well done everyone!

To celebrate our love of reading at Cockington, children will receive certificates to mark how many words they have read. The children have different targets , linked to their reading ability. A huge well done to those who are working hard to reach their targets. 🙂

We are teaming up with xmas4schools so we can raise money for our school and spread some Christmas cheer! Your child will be coming home with information about how their designs can be transformed into Christmas gifts. The designs need to be back to your child’s class teacher by the 21st October. You will then get more information about how you can purchase your child’s design. Get creative!

Today, Samantha from St Mathew's Church came to talk to the children about harvest and how it is a time to be thankful. She talked about what is needed to make bread - and the many people it takes to make the ingredients needed. We thought about how lucky we are and how we are grateful for what we have. We will be collecting donations such as tins and packets for Thrive Torbay throughout the week, to share with others that are less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you for any donations you are able to give.

Year 6 had a visitor on Monday morning - Miss Wilson (who taught some of our current year 6 children when they were in year 3) came back to Cockington to show us her amazing artwork. She explained her process as an artist, her inspirations and her techniques. We will be using all of this new knowledge in our art lessons this half term when the children practice their realistic drawings of plants from Torre Abbey gardens. https://www.nwilsonart.com/

Yesterday, some of our children had their first Rock Steady session with Victoria, our Rock Steady band leader! We’re so excited to see our new musicians develop and flourish with their bandmates. There are still spaces if anyone else wants to sign up.

Year 2 visited St Matthews Church today to learn about some of the important features of a church and to think about why people may visit a church. Some children were so inspired that they built a church in the playground when we returned to school. The children asked some amazing questions and were absolute superstars!

As part of their art and design learning, Year 5 visited Cockington Country Park to complete the sculpture trail and viewed a range of pieces by local sculptors. They were also inspired by local artist, Nicola Axe Sculptor, who gave the children an insight into what being a sculptor is all about. They watched a demonstration, got a chance to see her workshop and ask any questions that they had.

Jacob Guy, an ex student of Cockington Primary School, has won first place in the Young Ocean Photographer of the Year. An algae octopus shows off its fluorescence - this a chemical process when a material absorbs light and then gives off light of a different colour - under ultraviolet light. This picture was taken in North Sulawesi. Wow! What an aspirational Annie!
