About this curriculum

Pupils are taught the importance of respecting other’s beliefs and encouraged to explore and develop their own opinions in the increasingly diverse locality of Torbay.

Through our RE curriculum, we ensure that pupils gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, building on prior knowledge to prepare them for the next stage of their lives. At Cockington, pupils have the opportunity to meet and talk with members of local faith groups and also explore, virtually, places of worship that are not accessible to our locality. Children will leave our school, with the self-belief to express their own views and insights, with respect and empathy. Our RE curriculum will help them to become good citizens, in a world consisting of many faiths and beliefs, within and beyond our locality.

Sequential curriculum

The RE at Cockington is taken from the Devon agreed syllabus. RE strands are identified, with substantive and disciplinary knowledge that deepens and broadens progressively each year:

  • Make sense of belief
  • Understand the Impact
  • Make Connections
  • SMSC Development

Substantive concepts are identified within subjects. The understanding of these is deepened every time they are re-visited through links to prior learning.

Year 2 had a visit from Sophie Pierre from Montel Civil Engineering, the company carrying out the works at Torquay harbour. She talked to the classes about constructing bridges, how health and safety has changed and then challenged them to make a bridge using only paper! It was lots of fun and the children have new ideas for their final bridges now.

Year 5/6 Boys Football Cockington A 3-0 Shiphay A Goals: Finley Alfie C Jack POTM: Roman - Made some great saves and deserved his clean sheet, making sure we was still in the game. Last Thursday we hosted Shiphay in the first game of the new season. After defeating them 2-1 previously the boys looked to make it another win. The first half was very slow and the boys struggled, thanks to Roman making some great saves and some good blocks from Leo, we went into half time 0-0. We woke up second half and Finley grabbed another goal, coolly slotting between the keepers legs. Alfie grabbed the second in pretty much identical fashion. Finally Captain Jack scored a lovely solo goal. Good start to the season. Well done boys.
