About this curriculum

We teach French as our chosen language. Many of our local secondary schools teach this language and we aim to build the foundation of the language here at Cockington, and prepare them for further successful learning.

Children are given opportunities to listen to the language through our language programme, Language Angels. This progresses into speaking the language, which is broken down into steps for a better understanding. This not only key for learning French, but for every lesson. At Cockington, pupils build on the prior learning of the language to be able to hold conversations in French and are given opportunities to have purposeful communication.

In addition to this, writing in French varies in lengths for different purposes and audiences depending on the year group. In their writing, the children use a variety of grammatical structures to demonstrate what that they have learnt during their lessons. Learning a second language provides a level of respect for different people’s faiths and cultures, as the children learn where French is spoken in the world. This helps the pupils to learn more about their own culture by reflecting and comparing. The topics that are covered create meaningful links which are relevant to the pupils and cover subjects that are taught in core lessons such as learning about the planets and the solar system.

Sequential curriculum

MFL strands with declarative and procedural knowledge that deepens and broadens progressively each year:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Grammar

The understanding of these is deepened every time they are re-visited through links to prior learning.

We are having great fun with some new equipment outside for our OPAL play. We have some new soft shapes, some wheelie chairs and parents have donated some cable reels and dressing up clothes recently. Our Cockington PTA have paid for some crates, new bubble machines and some more site down wheelie boards! We are always looking for more items to keep our play fun and creative. If you are able to source any of the following items we would be most grateful! Thank you!

We have enjoyed using our crossing patrol over the last couple of weeks. Please remember to wait on the pavement until you are told it's OK to cross. The crossing patrol will make their way into the road first, stop the traffic, then signal that it's safe for you to cross.

Year 6 had a special visitor this morning — Miss Wilson! Many of the children remembered her from their Year 3 days, and it was wonderful to welcome her back to Cockington. She shared her journey as an artist, talking us through her inspirations, techniques, and the creative process behind her work. Her visit has left us full of ideas, and we’ll be using this inspiration in our art sessions over the half term as we look closely at nature and experiment with different ways to capture it — while also exploring and developing our own artistic styles. Safe to say, Year 6 are really branching out with their creativity this term! 🌿 https://www.nwilsonart.com/

This morning was Year 1 Rabbits class turn for our trip to Torre Abbey Sands identifying Human and physical features in our local environment. The children used their maps to help them find the way from school to the beach, on the way we stopped off at Kings Gardens to feed the local ducks 🦆 and swans 🦢 We then walked along the seafront and the tide was really far in so the children loved watching the waves crash up against the wall, trying not to get wet! 💦 We were lucky to find a little bit of beach at the corner of Corbyn Head where the children sketched a human and physical feature. We then had a play on the beach before heading back to school. Lots of fun had by everyone, we were very lucky with the weather again ☀️ Thank you for those parents that were able to come along and help! 😊

We had such a great morning with David Hill! The whole school completed the circuit training and had a great time! We really enjoyed learning about David and how he used independence and perseverance to chase his dream of being an Olympic athlete. Thank you for any donations you have already made, we are truly grateful.

Today, Year 5 took a trip to Cockington Court to explore their yearly sculpture trail, somewhere where we will display our finished art sculptures. While they were there, they were lucky enough to take part in a workshop with sculptor Allan Poxton, who gave us a brilliant introduction to making wire sculptures. He showed us some of his amazing work, talked about his creative process, and explained how long each piece can take to bring to life. We cannot wait to show him our finished pieces. The children showed all our school values while at Cockington Court and were an asset to the school.

Year 2 had a slightly soggy fieldwork trip to the seafront today. We were looking for human and physical features and even carried out a survey to see whether we met more tourists or locals (it was about even!). The children behaved beautifully and did some lovely sketches of geographical features they had seen.
