Year 3

Last week, Year 3 visited Torre Abbey to get inspiration for their art work which is inspired by nature! They had an amazing time and gathered such a lot of ideas to bring back to school!

Cross Country Success! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ A huge well done to our fantastic runners who represented Cockington Primary School at the Connect Games Cross Country event at Widey Court yesterday! The children showed incredible determination, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the afternoon. We are so proud of their efforts and the way they supported and encouraged one another! A special thank you to Sofia’s mum for the delicious homemade banana bread, which was a very welcome treat for our runners! 🍌💙 Well done, Team Cockington! 🌟

This morning, our whole school took part in The Literacy Trust’s 'Take 10 to Read' Guinness World Record attempt for the most people reading in 12 hours! Our younger children enjoyed a story and draw-along, while our older children took part in a story and Q&A with author Frank Cottrell-Boyce. It was a fantastic celebration of reading across our school & we are hoping to find out by the end of the month whether the record has been broken!

Last week, Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Torquay Museum, exploring what life was like in Roman Britain. We examined Roman armour, discovered fascinating facts about the past and got creative by making our own colourful mosaics and clay oil lamps. It was a brilliant hands-on day bringing our history learning to life & the children behaved impeccably!

Our clubs have got off to a great start. Ms Burton and Mrs Turner have begun their Wild for Learning club with an Autumnal feel!

We were so proud and so impressed with how brilliant the Year 6s were when we welcomed Miss Wilson (an ex-teacher of Cockington and part-time professional artist) in to share her artistic processes and talent. They listened intently and asked insightful questions. The children must have been inspired, as they then produced some fantastic, realistic sketches of flowers Torre Abbey flowers in our afternoon art lesson. If this is what they can produce in a practice lesson, we can’t wait to see their final pieces at the end of the half term!

Today, our year 5 pupils had an incredible hands-on learning experience when local sculptor Allan Poxton paid a special visit to our school. Allan brought in a selection of his artwork to share with the children before giving a live rock-mod demonstration. The children were captivated throughout, asking insightful questions about his techniques, inspiration, and artistic process. It was a wonderful session that left our young artists full of creative ideas and ready to start designing their very own sculptures! A huge thank you to Allan for taking the time to inspire our pupils today.

Today, Year 5 visited Cockington Court to explore the annual Sculpture Trail and gather inspiration for their own sculptures, which will be displayed at Paignton Zoo during October half-term! The children enjoyed exploring the different artwork and were even lucky enough to see some glass blowing in action. They demonstrated our school values brilliantly throughout the visit and were a credit to Cockington Primary School.

Year 2 had a fantastic geography field trip trip this morning. They worked hard on spotting human and physical features at Torquay seafront. They also surveyed members of the public by asking them if they were local or tourists. Lots of the tourists were in Torquay for the Agatha Christie festival. The children were amazing and a massive thanks to the grown ups who helped us.

This week, we were thrilled to welcome local author Luke Marchant Author to Cockington Primary! Luke kicked off his visit with an inspiring whole-school assembly, sharing his journey as an author and giving our pupils a behind-the-scenes look into his writing life. Following the assembly, year 5 took part in an exciting creative writing workshop. They've now been set an amazing challenge: designing and creating their very own sculptures for Paignton Zoo! 🐘🦁 Keep an eye out for their finished creations, which will be proudly on display at the zoo during half term. We can't wait to see what they build.
